Download The Darcys - Centerfold
As fans of Mad Men can attest, California is often portrayed as the ideal getaway for folks like Don Draper — those tired and disillusioned by the fast-paced, cutthroat lifestyle of New York. Alt-pop outfit The Darcys know the feeling all too well, as they hail from the Big Apple’s icy neighbor city to the north, Toronto. The Polaris Prize-nominated two-piece even penned a song about it for upcoming album Centerfold.
Titled “San Diego, 1988”, it’s a glimmering cut that practically begs you to pack up your bags and head west to the sprawling Pacific Coast. There are Chromeo-esque grooves and a bursting, synth-lined chorus that sounds like Passion Pit took a bullet train to Funky Town — basically, it’s nearly impossible not to imagine the bliss that is life as a laid-back SoCal native.
The Darcys - Centerfold
“I think there is an immediacy to the imagery of a specific time and place that really connects with people,” The Darcys tell Consequence of Sound in a statement. ‘San Diego, 1988’ is road trip song about giving into the fantasy of escapism and defending the idea of a simpler kind of love. ‘All we need is each other and the open road,’ or so the story goes.”
Check out the track above via its lyric video, which stars über-cool band members Jason Couse and Wes Marskell. Centerfold follows 2013’s well-received Warring and arrives on November 4th via Arts & Crafts. Find the tracklist, as well as The Darcys’ upcoming tour dates, below.
