Darkthrone Artist Info
Norway’s coldest duo, Darkthrone, have announced their first new album in three years and 16th overall studio effort, Arctic Thunder. Serving as the successor to The Underground Resistance, it will mark a departure from the NWOBHM styled, punk leaning morbidities they’ve delved in for the better part of the new millennium.
To give fans an indication of Darkthrone’s mindset, drummer Fenriz and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Nocturno Culto recorded and self-produced Arctic Thunder at “The Bomb Shelter,” their rehearsal space between 1988 and 1990. Posting on the band’s Facebook page, Fenriz began, “Hi folks, it’s time to talk a bit about our new album — and as I don’t like to talk or write about music much I can say that it is more serious and primitive than usual.”
The drummer went on to reveal that vocals were strictly handled by Nocturno Culto (the first time in over a decade) with the thought process that it would “create a more solemn/introvert atmosphere.” The title itself was taken from an “old mega-obscure Norwegian band from the ’80s,” who granted Darkthrone permission to use the name for the record. As for the artwork, the image was taken from one of Fenriz’s camping trips.
